In the morning on Saturday, March 5, five teams of grade 5-8 students participated in the 2022 Indianapolis Regional You Be The Chemist Challenge at Heritage Research Group’s The Center. Four of the teams were from Eman School and the fifth team was from the Young Hoosier Chemistry Club.

All teams answered four rounds of 10 chemistry questions each and their cumulative team score was used to determine the top 3 teams in the challenge. All teams did very well in the competition and their scores were close.

All participating students and their team coordinators received a certificate of excellence plus a bag of giveaways from the Chemical Educational Foundation that organizes the You Be The Chemist Challenge.

The teams with the highest cumulative scores across all 4 rounds received placement medals and certificates and some really cool science kits. The Young Hoosier Chemistry Club took first place and two of the Eman schools teams placed second and third.

The challenge is just one component of the 2022 You Be The Chemist Competition!

ALL teams from Indiana who participated in a Indianapolis regional challenge or the virtual challenge will also submit a 3-5 minute video in the 2022 You Be The Chemist Video Competition. This year’s concept for the video competition is the states of matter related to space.

The total score for each participating team will be a combination of the team’s challenge score and the score that the team receives for their video submission. Total team scores (challenge plus video) will be used to identify the top team in Indiana.

The top 5 teams from around the US will participate in the National Competition in Houston in June.

Congratulations to all the students who participated in this year’s Indianapolis regional challenge.

Thanks to the team coordinators for their great work in helping the student teams prepare for the challenge and to our team of volunteers who helped put on the challenge.

A very special thanks to our regional Sponsors: Heritage Research Group for providing the venue and Corteva Agriscience and Superior for their financial support of the Chemical Education Educational Foundation.
