The Celebrate Science Indiana organizing committee has been working diligently to move the 2021 festival forward with the intent of holding an in-person event on Saturday, October 2, 2021. However, overcoming the difficulties health officials and others face in being able to contain the spread of COVID 19 remains a challenge despite everyone’s best efforts. Much data has been collected and analyzed concerning the spread and specific populations that continue to be highly susceptible to the virus. This is particularly true for the main age group that regularly attends Celebrate Science Indiana, grade school and middle school students, who currently are not eligible to be vaccinated.
As scientists and supporters of investigative opportunities for students, the Science Education Foundation of Indiana (SEFI) and the Celebrate Science Indiana organizing committee felt it was our scientific and social obligation to keep our youth and their families safe as much as possible and to cancel Celebrate Science Indiana 2021. Given the popularity of the event in the past, this was not an easy decision to make. However, we feel it was the best decision to make.
We will continue to monitor the situation in 2022 and, circumstance permitting, we will host Celebrate Science Indiana again on Saturday, October 1, 2022.
