The Science Education Foundation of Indiana (SEFI) mourns the loss of H. William Gilmore, D.D.S., a dedicated leader whose passion for science education shaped the organization and inspired countless individuals. As SEFI’s former Executive Director, Dr. Gilmore worked tirelessly to support young scientists and foster a culture of curiosity and innovation in Indiana.

Dr.Gilmore’s presence was deeply felt within SEFI, leaving an indelible mark on its members and the broader science education community. Cynthia, a member of SEFI, reflected on his influence, stating, “Bill Gilmore was a huge presence when I first joined SEFI, so I definitely wanted to know.” His impact extended beyond professional connections, resonating on a personal level. Tom recalled, “My wife and I had supper with Bill and his wife at a SEFI event a few years ago, and it was delightful. He was a great inspiration for all who got to meet him.”

His legacy as a science advocate reached institutions like the University of Southern Indiana (USI), where Shelly credited him as the reason she and USI became involved in science fairs and SEFI, sharing, “May he rest in peace.” Rick, another SEFI member, expressed his admiration: “Bill invited me to SEFI many years ago. He was always a positive, friendly, and optimistic science advocate. He will be missed.”

Beyond his work in science education, Dr. Gilmore enjoyed golfing purely for fun, often spending time on the course with his close friend Larry, an honorary lifetime member of SEFI’s Board of Directors. Larry shared, “Bill and I went golfing a lot, just for fun. He was a good person and left a great legacy.” His enthusiasm for life and the friendships he cultivated extended beyond SEFI, touching many who knew him.

In recognition of his profound contributions, Glen Cook, SEFI’s current Executive Director, has announced that SEFI will establish a scholarship in Dr. Gilmore’s name for the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair. This scholarship will serve as a lasting tribute to his dedication to science education and his unwavering support of young innovators.
